Self-Employed Program
Canada’s Self-Employed Persons Program is designed for individuals who have relevant experience in cultural activities or athletics and who intend to become self-employed in Canada. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to make a significant contribution to Canada’s cultural or athletic life.
Applicants must also show that they have sufficient funds to support themselves and their family members after arriving in Canada. Final approval is subject to meeting medical, security, and admissibility requirements under Canadian immigration law.
Requirements
“Self-employed person”
A self-employed person is a foreign national who:
- Has relevant experience in cultural activities or athletics
- Intends and is able to be self-employed in Canada
- Can make a significant contribution to Canada’s cultural or athletic sectors
Applications are assessed based on selection factors such as experience, education, age, language ability, and adaptability, in line with current immigration assessment practices.
“Relevant experience”
Relevant experience generally means at least two years of experience within the period specified by immigration regulations before the application is submitted. This experience may include:
- Self-employment in cultural activities or athletics
- Participation at a world-class level in cultural activities or athletics
- Other qualifying experience recognized under current immigration program guidelines
Applicants must provide supporting documentation to demonstrate their professional background and achievements.
“Specified economic activities”
Specified economic activities under this program primarily include:
- Cultural activities
- Athletics

Financial Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate that they have adequate settlement funds to support themselves and accompanying family members after arriving in Canada. The required amount depends on family size and current IRCC settlement fund requirements.
