Caregiver Programs in Canada
Canada offers immigration pathways for qualified caregivers who wish to work in Canada and may later apply for permanent residence. The previous Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) is now closed to new applicants, and caregivers generally apply through current caregiver pilot programs or work permit pathways administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Caregivers may work in Canada providing care for:
Children
Elderly persons
Individuals with medical needs or disabilities
In most cases, caregivers are not required to live in the employer’s home, as live-in arrangements are no longer mandatory under current rules.
Main Requirements to Work as a Caregiver
To qualify under current caregiver pathways, applicants generally must meet the following requirements:
Education
Applicants must usually have the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma or higher, supported by an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if education was completed outside Canada.
Work Experience or Training
Applicants must demonstrate relevant work experience or training related to caregiving, such as childcare, home support, nursing assistance, or similar roles, depending on the specific program requirements in effect at the time of application.
Language Ability
Applicants must meet minimum language requirements in English or French, demonstrated through an approved language test. Language proficiency ensures the caregiver can communicate effectively and perform duties safely.
Job Offer
Applicants must have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer that meets program requirements. Employment conditions, wages, and responsibilities must comply with Canadian labour standards.
Admissibility
All applicants must pass medical, security, and background checks before receiving a work permit or permanent residence.
Pathway to Permanent Residence
Certain caregiver programs allow applicants to apply for permanent residence after gaining eligible Canadian work experience, provided they meet program criteria at the time of application. Requirements and quotas may change, so applicants should always refer to the latest IRCC guidance.
