Who Can Apply for Canadian Citizenship
Applying for Canadian citizenship is an important step. Careful preparation, accurate documentation, and following the correct procedure are essential to avoid delays or refusal.
To become a Canadian citizen, applicants must meet the eligibility requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
To apply for Canadian citizenship, you must generally meet the following conditions:
- You must be a Permanent Resident (PR) of Canada.
- You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the last 5 years before applying.
- You must have filed your income taxes, if required under Canadian law.
- You must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French (for applicants aged 18 to 54).
- You must pass the citizenship test (if required based on age).
- You must not be under a removal order or inadmissible due to criminal prohibitions.
A valid PR card is not mandatory to apply for citizenship. Even if your PR card has expired, you may still apply, provided you maintain permanent resident status.
These requirements may not apply in the same way to children under 18 years of age, who can apply under different provisions.
Criminal Prohibitions
You may not be eligible for citizenship if you have committed certain offences in or outside Canada.
For example, you may not qualify if you:
- Are serving a sentence, on parole, or on probation in Canada or abroad.
- Have been convicted of a serious criminal offence within the eligibility period.
- Are charged with or on trial for a criminal offence.
- Are under a removal order from Canada.
Time spent in prison, on parole, or in certain correctional supervision situations does not count toward physical presence in Canada.
Citizenship Test and Interview
Applicants between 18 and 54 years of age are usually required to:
- Take a citizenship test to demonstrate knowledge of Canada.
- Attend an interview with a citizenship officer, if required.
The test generally covers:
- Canadian history
- Geography
- Government and laws
- Rights and responsibilities of citizens
IRCC provides a free official study guide titled “Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship”, which is used to prepare for the test. Test questions are based on this guide.
The test may be conducted online or in person, depending on the applicant’s situation.
